Marble cutting with endless diamond wire

Marble cutting research provides a useful example of how feed rate, wire speed, and tension influence surface roughness in a mineral material.

Research observation

A Chinese marble cutting paper reports that, within its orthogonal experiment, feed rate had the strongest influence on surface roughness, followed by wire speed and then tension.

The reported optimum within that experiment was feed rate 10 mm/min, wire speed 30 m/s, and tension 100 N. These numbers belong to that specific setup.

Practical meaning

For stone and marble applications, slurry handling, debris removal, workpiece support, and wire wear can dominate practical performance.

The research is useful because it shows that surface quality should be tuned experimentally rather than assumed from machine power alone.
